Catching up
From the WebReader main window, you can catchup on all articles by just selecting the All articles menu item from the Catchup menu. This will cause the group name to disappear from the list and the group entry in the Newsrc.subscribed file to be updated, indicating that all messages have been read. When new messages arrive for the group, either via a manual or automatic rescan, the group name will reappear in the list, along with the number of new (unread) articles.
If you are currently reading articles in a newsgroup, you can catch up in one of three ways:
- By selecting All articles from the Catchup menu, all articles will be marked as read, the Newsrc.subscribed file will be updated and the WebReader main window will be displayed; the group name will not appear in the list until new articles are received for the group.
- By selecting Up to selected article from the Catchup menu, all articles up to and including the current one will be marked as read, the Newsrc.subscribed file will be updated and the WebReader main window will be displayed.
- By selecting After selected article from the Catchup menu, the current article and all following articles will be marked as read, the Newsrc.subscribed file will be updated and the WebReader main window will be displayed.
If, after reading an article, you wish to keep it in the list of unread articles, just select the article again and press the Mark Articles Unread button in the toolbar before exiting.
By selecting the Update Newsrc button or the Update newsrc item in the Done menu, all the article numbers of those articles marked as read will be used to update the Newsrc.subscribed file. However, if you select Leave all unread from the Done menu, the Newsrc.subscribed file will not be changed, and those articles will remain available for rereading.
