Using the integrated FAQs lists

WebReader includes an item in the Help menu which allows you to search for newsgroup Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) lists on the Internet. As distributed, WebReader includes links to both the home page of the Internet FAQ Archives as well as a possible page in the same site which might contain more specific help information. In addition, you may also include additional links as you wish. The FAQ database will also be updated automatically whenever you download an article containing a FAQ pointer in its header of the form X-FAQ-Location: <faq_url>, where <faq_url> is the URL for a page containing a FAQ list for the current group.

To access the FAQ search function from the WebReader main window, first select a group from the groups list. Next, select FAQs, etc. from the Help menu:

A dialog window similar to the following will appear:

If the FAQs list in the above window is non-empty, you can double click on an item to bring up a browser which will display the FAQ file, assuming the URL is still active; as shipped, the first entry in the FAQ file points to a page specific to the currently-selected newsgroup. Alternatively, by selecting the Request FAQ button a Compose Article window is displayed, with a message already set up to post to the currently-selected group requesting FAQ information:

You may modify any of the text in the Compose window before pressing the Deliver button.

After sending the FAQ request to the group, you may get a response either via e-mail or as a followup to the group. Once you get a URL or group name (some groups contain only FAQs!), simply enter it into the Add: field in the FAQ dialog box and press the Return/Enter key. The text you entered will be displayed in the list, to be selected later. By pressing the Save file button, you may save the contents of the list to disk, to be retrieved the next time you bring up the FAQ dialog box or by selecting the Load file button. You can remove elements from the list by selecting at least one and then pressing the Delete button. Select Done to exit the FAQ dialog window.

NB: You can enter anything into the FAQ list, such as the name of a FAQ newsgroup, but if you double click on an item which is not a valid URL you will get an error.
