If you have checked the Display group hierarchies: box in the server properties window, check out Displaying Group Hierarchies to see how to navigate down through the group hierarchy; otherwise, selecting any of the above options will cause a scrolling list to display, containing zero or more group names.
Performance note: Unless your NNTP server supports only a small number of groups, you are much better off using the hierarchical display option. For example, using an 85 MHz Sparc 5, 25,000+ newsgroups will display in about 20 seconds; selecting the flat (non-hierarchical) display option can take several minutes. As for downloading new groups, if you have a slow Internet connection you can save time by not selecting the Fetch group descriptions box in the Properties window.
Once the group names are displayed, select one or more items from the list to display the group descriptions, if any, for the selected groups:
Press the Subscribe button to subscribe to the selected group(s).
Press the Visit a Group button to visit a (single) selected group.
Select the Unsubscribe button in the toolbar to unsubscribe from the selected group(s).
Select the Properties button to display the properties dialog box.
Pressing the Return button will update the Newsrc.subscribed and Newsrc.unsubscribed files according to the group(s) marked as subscribed and unsubscribed, respectively, and then return you to the main window.
